Every summer as far back as I can remember, there has always been one summer film that stands out above the rest. In 1975 it was Jaws, in 1977 Star Wars, in 1982 E.T., 1993 Jurassic Park and so on. This summer there is one film I believe will be the BIG blockbuster of 2013. That film is Pacific Rim.
A primitive is sitting near a fire, inspecting and somehow adoring it. When this natural fire extinguishes, the primitive can’t figure out the reason but he gathers all his strengths to find out another source like this. Naoh, Amoukar and Gaw begin a travel as to understand the power of the fire … and the Quest for fire legend begins.
When we think of Stephen King we immediately think of “horror”. Dubbed the “Master of Horror”, King has scared us by taking the most innocent things like dogs, cars, clowns, kids, and many other things and turning them into nightmares. However, there is another side to King. He can write and tell the most amazing stories that have nothing really to do with horror such as; The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me (The Body), and The Green Mile. All three known as some of his best work. Well, you can now add another wonderful tale to that list: Joyland.
Family films are a genre that can almost gaurantee to be a sure bet at the box office. Pixar Films has proven to be number one in the business time and time again. Twelve years ago Pixar brought us Monsters Inc, a film about monsters who energize their city with the screams of children, soon realizing that scaring kids is wrong and find a peaceful way to do it. The two main stars of that film, Mike and Sully are back. However this is not a sequel, but a prequel to the first film.
The zombie craze has been going on for several decades now, with director George A. Romero‘s monumental film released in 1968, the now cult-classic Night of the iving dead. Since then horror flms have never been the same. With almost five decades of zombie films, merchandise, and one of the biggest hit shows in history, The walking dead on AMC, zombies are more popular now than ever.
Most of you know me as the film critic who post’s thoughts and reviews of some of the best and worst in films. However, once in awhile I like to do a book review. A book I feel is not only really good or interesting, but worth your time. You don’t have to be a horror fan to enjoy this book, but it helps because either way… NOS4A2 is gonna scare your socks off! SO, here is my thought’s and review of the latest Joe Hill novel; NOS4A2.
Jean Jacques Annaud’s (Enemy at the Gates) classic sci-fi fantasy Quest For Fire finally makes its UK Blu-ray release along with a DVD re-issue from Second Sight Films. 80,000 year ago a primitive tribe desperately guards its most valued possession, fire. They know how to tend it, how to use it, but its creation remains a mystery. During anattack by a neighbouring tribe their flame is lost and so begins an epic, obstacle-filled quest to find another source of the element so precious in their struggle for survival.
The Summer Blockbuster Train travels onward. We’ve seen some hits and some misses so far, but what could be the biggest film of the summer is now out in theaters! Man of steel has hit theaters and hit it hard. The latest Superman film has already broken box office records and here is my review of Man of steel.
The story is told through the eyes of a little boy, Isaac (played by Tyler Chase) who is get’s into trouble at school, does what he pleases, and mostly lies. He lies to his father, his teachers, and anyone who will listen. He comes from a broken home without a mother. His father (played by Rob Patterson) is a war vet and alcoholic who doesn’t really care about anything, not since his wife and Tyler’s mom left.
Once again it is time to take a break from Summer Blockbusters and take a moment to focus on the “smaller” films that are worth your time. As a firm believer in Short films and Independent films, I feel it is important to bring more of these type of films into the spotlight and be recognized as what they truly are; Art. Part of that is supporting your local Film Fests, Independent filmakers, and supporting the “Dollar Baby” program.
