THE SHAPE OF WATER – Guillermo del Toro

The shape of water

Which film has gotten me this excited? THE SHAPE OF WATER, directed by Guillermo del Toro, who is without a doubt, a self proclaimed fanboy, and perhaps the poster child for fanboys everywhere. Del Toro is famed for bringing us great fantasy stories. HELLBOY 1 & 2, PAN’S LABYRINTH, and PACIFIC RIM, are just a few that bring us into his world, and his slant on addressing every day life situations.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS – Kenneth Branagh

Murder on the orient express

Of course, many of you may already know and love the great works of author, Agatha Christie. She has dazzled us with many fine murder mysteries, some of which have been made into films. In 1974, an all star cast, including actor Albert Finney, as detective Hercule Poirot, and Lauren Bacall as Mrs. Hubbard, just to mention two, brought us the last rendition of Christie’s gripping novel.

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES – Matt Reeves

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

This third, and final film of the franchise, so they say, is the sequel to 2011′s, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and 2014′s, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, both successful films, and this new film, is no exception.

THE MARTIAN – Ridley Scott

The martian

Director Ridley Scott is no stranger to Science Fiction films. He has brought us many great films but he is known for his Syfy hit Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Prometheus (2012) which were huge box office hits and way ahead of their time. Scott brings us back to the syfy universe with his latest film, The Martian. Based on Andy Weir’s 2011 best-seller, this is an epic film on the grandest scale with amazing vision, Special Effects, and music set to an incredible story that sucks you in and cheering on the main character of Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) till the very end.

IT FOLLOWS – David Robert Mitchell

IT FOLLOWS - John Carpenter

I love me some John Carpenter which might seem like I’m about to start pointing the “thief stick” but really I’m not. To talk about It Follows however is impossible to do and NOT mention the very obvious influence of Carpenter, because It Follows is kind of like an abstract version of Halloween except for the soundtrack which very much sounds like experimental electronic music from the 70’s –so that is VERY John Carpenter.

WICKED CITY – Yoshiaki Kawajiri

I’m guessing this will date me but I’m so old that we didn’t call it anime, we called it japanimation. The term “anime” didn’t make sense to me, japanimation was made up of the two words that describe what we were watching: “Japan” the country where it was from and “animation” what it was. Around 1997/8 someone told me that japanimation wasn’t politically correct… I still don’t get why, nor do I care but what I’m talking about is so old school I can only call it by what it was to me: japanimation.

INTERSTELLAR – Christopher Nolan

Back in 2005, director Christopher Nolan decided to take over the Batman franchise and begin what would be his, “Dark Knight Trilogy”. No one knew what to expect back then. Fanboys of the Tim Burton Batman films of the late 1980′s/early 1990′s, screamed because they thought their beloved franchise would be ruined. Instead it became the biggest and most amazing superhero franchise to date.

RAMPAGE: CAPITAL PUNISHMENT – Uwe Boll

The clip slides into the base of the gun, you then bull back on the lever and now it’s ready to shoot. This is how you should prepare yourself when you sit down to watch Rampage: Capital Punishment. The movie is an emotional assault weapon. And to write this review, I honestly had to rip myself open to write this review Rampage: Capital Punishment has me a bit choked up, it cuts close the bone.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – James Gunn

The Marvel comic book superheroes have been dominating the box office for quite awhile now. Everything from Iron Man to Captain America to The Avengers, but now, a new superhero film has been released like no other. When I first watched Guardians of the galaxy I couldn’t help but think about the old 1980′s Scifi Adveture/Comedy films like Ice Pirates, Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, & even Spaceballs, but Guardians of the galaxy is a lot better than those films.
