WOMAN IN BLACK – James Watkins

In life, we have many different types of discussions. On the topic of Films, many different subjects come up. Things like why did they have to make a sequel to that?, Is the original better than the remake? and Best (fill in genre) Film of all time? Well, one subject that always seems to come up is, Hollywood doesn’t make good Horror films anymore.

RAMPART – Oren Moverman

This is a film that goes back to the hardcore cop films of the 80′s and mostly 90′s. It is raw, hard-core, and very violent. The story takes place in 1999, when the Rampart Division was under major criticism. Woody Harrelson plays David “Date Rape” Brown, an old school, racists, violent, womanizing veteran officer who defends himself against his actions as a tough officer of the law.

TAKEN – Pierre Morel

Taken is an action-packed film that doesn’t hold back. It is a rollercoaster ride through the streets of Paris and doesn’t catch its breath till the very end. The story begins state-side with Bryan Mills (played by Liam Neeson), who is a retired CIA Agent who is divorced and on his own. He has a 17 year old daughter named, Kim (played by Maggie Grace), who has one dream: to go to Paris with her best friend, Amanda (played by Katie Cassidy).

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS – Drew Goddard

It has been awhile since I’ve been to the movie theater. Usually this time of year, Spring is considered the box office’s slowest time. Everyone is waiting for that big Summer Kick-off which usually starts first week of May. However, it seems that this time of year, there is at least ONE surprise film that takes us off guard that we don’t see coming. A film that puts a twist on that particular genre. In this case, it’s Horror films. Horror films have been a rollorcoaster ride for many years. With Slasher films of the 80′s, the “Make fun of the Genre” (like Scream) in the 90′s, the “Torture” Horror films of the 00′s, and now it’s time for something new. And right now with the release of Cabin in the woods, we have that “new” face of Horror. It’s called; “the twist”. That’s right, take a scenario that we all know and have heard of before and give it a twist you don’t see coming – that’s Cabin in the woods.

THE HELP – Tate Taylor

The Help is about a young writer, Skeeter (played by Emma Stone), who just came back to her hometown in 1960′s Mississippi from college. More than anything she wants to be a published writer. As she get’s a small job working for the local newspaper, she feels that she can do more with her life and her talent. After seeing how the African-American Help are treated at one of her friends of high society party’s, she get’s the idea to write a book based on the stories of the Help that cook, clean, take care of white babies, and put up with a lot of racism.

THE DEAD – Howard Ford, Jonathan Ford

Being a huge fan of living dead films and of Night of the Living Dead, it is hard to watch these type of films because you know going in that it won’t be as good as NOTLD or that they are just gonna try and copy it somehow. Well, I was completely wrong when it came to this film. I was blown away by The Dead. It is original, heart-warming, and for once it takes place in another country! Finally something different, but it doesn’t stop there with its originality.

RED STATE – Kevin Smith

When it comes to 90′s Generation/Independent Icon director, Kevin Smith, a few things come to mind. Low budget, great comedy, Jay & Silent Bob, the ‘Jersey’ film trilogy, and Pop Culture overdose. What doesn’t come to mind is ….horror film? Kevin Smith has entertained us for over 2 decades. Starting his career with the ultimate Independent Comedy film, CLERKS. Filmed in black and white, a shoe-string budget, and staring most of his friends – Smith took Hollywood by storm with his fast dialogue, witty humor, and colorful and unforgettable characters.

WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE – Todd Solondz

Welcome to the Dollhouse is not like a regular comedy, it’s a “dark comedy”. It’s also a low budget film & an Independent which I believe is some of the best films out there because they depend on acting, writing, and a vision as say, a big budget-all CGI-3D- big studio release type of film might not be. I saw this film WAY back in 1995, bought the DVD a year ago, & JUST watched it after all this time (hence the new catagory name). It is … different, that’s for sure.

THE TOWN – Ben Affleck

Year’s ago way back in the 90′s, on a bright sunny day in Southern California, we lived in the San Fernando Valley. And one day, there were some men who decided to rob one of the biggest banks in the area. This was a huge breaking story and my wife and step-daughter were stuck at a 7-11 right near the bank because they closed off the entire area.

BAG OF BONES – Mick Garris

One of our greatest writer’s of all time, Stephen King, has brought us many, many wonderful tales of horror, susupense, and wonderment. Over the years, some of these tales have been brought to the big and little screen. There hasn’t been a Stephen King film since 2007 which was The Mist and 1408, however, there hasn’t been a King film made for T.V. since 2006 which was Desperation, directed by Mick Garris. Well, Garris is back behind the camera again with his latest adaptation of a Stephen King novel.
