THE CREEK – Erik Soulliard
A group of friends go for a weekend in a cabin inside the woods; all looks well until one of them, Billy, dies in shady circumstances leaving every people of group distrustful although police initial the event as accidental death. When the fifth anniversary of the death of Billy comes his ghost materialize, pushing his friends to meet again to solve the question. The cabin in the middle of nowhere becomes the place coming back to, facing the past and digging in everybody’s remembering to live again that tragic night…for the last time.
The Creek directed by Erik Soulliard has the great merit to be filmed also entirely by night in spite of low-budget usually doesn’t allow this, without falling into catastrophic results. Praiseworthy in this way the work done by Jason Contino as director of photography. Good the cast proof too, especially the interpretation of Kathryn Merry (as Angel) who is able to give reliability to her character availing herself of magnetic fascination strong enough to catalyse observers sight. The comic scenes done by Erik Soulliard (Jesse) and Brian Jesiolowski (Coop) are funny too, they are a sort of Lauren and Hardy who juice up various situations.
Major attention was to be kept, instead, to ghost apparition scene, mainly ‘cause in The Creek there aren’t real Screaming Queens, in fact face expressions of actress aren’t able to convince the audience.
Main problem of “The Creek” is the plot: unfortunately the situation causes countless deja-vu, carrying on inconvenient comparisons. In this way the genuineness of operation fills up with leaks, despite the good taste of production and final result. Deserving the choice to keep quiet with gore scenes insistence, preferring nocturnal atmosphere and fear crescendo.
The original soundtrack sees Andrew Strauss and Tim Jesiolowski realizing great work, supporting scenes with metal riffing and synth rotation, as well as to satisfy different palates and acting skilfully for events unravelling. Passion oozes from every frame, there are abilities and capabilities, I can’t tell anything more to Soulliard that commiting himself widely during storyline steps in order to put forward an original and well structured project besides skilful realization. Winner of Illinois International Film Festival 2007.
