There are many films that focus on seemingly more innocent periods of time, in this case the early 1960′s. Such films as Where The Boys Are, Bye Bye Birdie, and many other films epitomize this era. There is, however, one film that brings much of this era to light from the teenage perspective. On August 11th, 2023, the film AMERICAN GRAFFITI will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Filmmaker Billy Hanson has made an impact on us in several ways. He has been a part of the film industry since 2005, directing both short and full-length features, and is the winner of several film awards for his outstanding work. He is also the director behind one of the most popular, most gross, award-winning Stephen King Dollar Baby films, SURVIVOR TYPE. This short film is based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, which is one of the titles Billy selected from the Dollar Baby short films adaptation program, allowed by Stephen King to be purchased for the amount of…one single dollar!
There are many books written about Stephen King, who is considered one of the greatest horror writers of all time. Authors such as Stephen Spignesi, Robin Furth, Joe Maddrey, and many others (including myself) have all written about his works. However, there is one particular author who has been writing about Stephen King for a very long time, and is highly qualified and respected in the Stephen King universe. As musician Neil Young is to music (with his extraordinary guitar playing) being dubbed the “Godfather of Grunge, author Bev Vincent is also known as the “Godfather” to those who know his name throughout the world of all things that surround Stephen King. He has been revered for his in depth writing, and for paving the way for others who have also been enthralled with Stephen King.
There are so many film franchises it’s hard to keep up, and they generally are from the horror genre. From SAW, SCREAM, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, JAWS, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST., and FRIDAY THE 13th (which are all greats) there seems to be one that really resonates with fans…HALLOWEEN. This particular franchise not only kicked off an entire subgenre of “slasher films” within the horror genre, but also had its own long line of sequels that finally came to an end in October, 2022. It seems that through the decades HALLOWEEN films have sustained the test of time.
In May of 2023, it will mark the 12th year I’ve been a contributing writer of the Tri County Sun Newspaper. It’s been a true honor being a part of the Ness Press newspaper family. This marks my “200th” published article. I wanted to make this milestone issue something very special. When I thought about what I could do, I wanted something that was interesting, and also celebrating an anniversary. Immediately I thought…STAR WARS! To be more specific, STAR WARS:RETURN OF THE JEDI.
Sitting down with a good read is still something that many of us love to do. Picking up a book transports anywhere we want to go. Many of us love to be scared out of our wits by a great horror story. What better time than Autumn to read creepy tales of things that go bump in the night? Christofer Cook’s two books, AMITYVILLE 1925, and HALLOW EVIL give readers plenty of scares through one creepy tale after another.
When we hear the title and name, author Stephen King, we generally think of his world renowned status as the “master of horror” with his many books and film adaptations. We think of killer clowns, evil dogs, cats, cars, and even children, but what we don’t think of is…cooking. Specifically, a cookbook. That’s until now.
Just about every one of us has a favorite film, one we place above all others. For some of us it’s our favorite actor, storyline or type of film that draws us back to watch over, and over again. However, there are those very special films that are just so good that we appreciate every aspect of them. There has been one film in my lifetime that is still my favorite after many decades, it’s perfect in every way…WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY!
Tony’s review of ROBIN WILLIAMS AMERICAN MASTER (a new book release), and exclusive Interview with author, Stephen Spignesi…It goes without saying, 2020 has been a year unlike any other. However, not all things in 2020 were bad. One of the good things this year was there were some great new books released, and reading is always a wonderful diversion.
Over the years I’ve reviewed everything from films, books, and conventions, but tis my very first review of a CD! It’s really been fun and different, but I was up for the challenge. The CD comes from someone that is not only a musician, but in the film industry as well. Director Mick Garris, has been bringing us films for decades, and is an icon in the horror genre.
