A GOOD MARRIAGE – Peter Askin
With the exception of the “reboot” of Carrie in 2013, there hasn’t been a theater release of a Stephen King film since 2007′s The Mist. There have been some straight-to-dvd releases and some that have played on television, but this is the first otherwise.
I was so excited when I first heard about it, however, the film is in select theaters only. The good news is, thanks to the source of cable television, it was also playing on opening weekend on Video On Demand as well. Nothing like watching a King new release in the comfort of your own home. The film is based on a short story of the same name from the book, Full dark, no stars.
The film is about a married couple of 25yrs. who have a normal life: kids, successful job, nice house, and even a nice hobby/business of buying and selling rare coins. Just your average family life. However, things change after the wife, Darcy Anderson (played by Joan Allen), looks for batteries in a box out in their garage. During her search, she stumbles across a hidden box that she’s curious about. It is inside that box that a mystery is revealed about her husband, Bob (played by Anthony LaPaglia), the successful Portland Maine accountant and coin collector has a secret … a very deadly secret. Darcy has to decided if she should report her husband of 25yrs. or learn to live with this dark secret? Does love conquer all or will justice be served? To find out, I recommend A good marriage.
I was very excited to finally see a new Stephen King adaption, been way too long. However, even though this was a good film and entertaining, I felt it was..simple. Basic story, a little predictable, and average ending. Joan Allen does a fine job as ‘Darcy’ and is convincing once she finds out about her husbands “secret”. A few jumps, but not “scary”. It is worth watching, tho.
